North Pier Blackpool

July has been the wettest July in memory. My grass was knee high before I could get to mow it and it’s very difficult to cut when it is so high, but I got through it and then had to go lie down as my back was killing me.. I must find a gardener and soon. Myself and ten of my old school pals met up in Blackpool for our Lunch this month but it was a disaster, It was heavy rain all day we were soon cold and wet . The meal left a lot to be desired too, Blackpool just does not cater for the discerning palate, I don’t think we will be returning there again. We eventually found sanctuary in a tea room at the end of the North Pier at least we where dry and we enjoyed afternoon tea.

Sunday afternoon I attended a local coffee bar called Butterflies, to read some of my poetry ,the afternoon was a combination of music poetry and song. It was excellent I enjoyed it very much, there is so much undiscovered talent in the North West. Thursday I was in the company of Stoneclough WI, with my friend Dorothy. We went by coach to the Lowry Centre for some retail therapy before we dined aboard a large canal boat whilst cruising down the River Irwell. We had a very good guide who gave a comprehensive commentary on Manchester’s past, it was the largest port in England at one time but not now. Quite a few canals have been renovated and boats travel along the Leeds- Liverpool Canal during summer hired for holidays. Today its been closed because of the water shortage. believe it, they say it is because we had a very dry winter and in spite of the daily heavy downpours the reservoirs are only 10% full. It rained all day but we had a great time and afterwards we where taken to Bents Garden Centre a very exclusive establishment for afternoon tea. I bought another whicker basket, my collection is now becoming embarrassing, but this was rather special, its large and deep and will be very useful.

I can`t believe that it is August already, the summer nearly over, the nights are drawing in, where is this much promised sunshine. Dorothy and I are looking forward to Portugal next month so we should get some sun, but there is no guarantee, even in Portugal it can rain for weeks.

Over the last few months I have been knitting baby bob hats for Save the Children Fund. The WI have asked all the members to knit these hats. In the past we have knit for Premature Babies Charity and Mission to Seaman . My friend Ann, has knit 100 hats that are very impressive in brightly coloured wool, we were told not to use white wool because it is a mourning colour in Africa.. My contribution is a measly 25 hats , I really thought I had done more but ……

Drove up to Knaresborough to help Stu and Co move house. It was a back breaking effort for Stu and Sara but thankfully its almost over. I was there to brew up, empty boxes and clean. Enjoyed it even though I was knackered when I got home, I was pleased that I had been useful.

In February I applied to be a volunteer at our local Library and I have just been accepted as a Computer Mentor. All Libraries now have a computer suite and offer computer courses run by Volunteers . Anyone can book the PC`s they are free for one hour. Once a week I will be mentoring two beginner for one hour each for a period of six weeks. I am really looking forward to introducing beginners to the Computer.

I can see my apple trees from this window, they look heavily laden with fruit and in a few weeks I will be busy picking, cooking and freezing the apples. Its not easy picking them as the trees are quite tall, we did prune it hard last year but it still looks high. I can`t believe that autumn is steadily creeping up again.
